We throw this title around very loosely. So it raises the question, what qualities must a rapper possess to be considered an Emcee? If you watched the film of the same title they say 1st you gotta have a name and yada fuckin yada. Everyone has a name, and they're like assholes, some stink some don't. When we say MC here, We Mean Real MC. Can the said rapper spit on the spot, off the head, raw flow? Because FRESTYLES ARE NEVER WRITTEN. Seeing how that is the core of hip hop that is the most important quality. Swagger is also a must (gotta be you 1st) When I say swagger I dont necessarily mean FLOSS, because everything aint for everybody. Originality...T-Pain chastises others for using auto-tune, but he jocked that fresh from Mr. Troutman... tho thats like me doimg the Serch running man 20 years later and calling it my own...whatevers clever, dude was hilarious when we met him. Yeah you gotta be original in your spit, style, and beat selection...ah the music, MC's choose different beats than rappers, it's a fact can you imagine Mos Def on a Franchise Boyz Beat...didnt think so. What qualities do you think make an Emcee? Remember MC Means MOVE THE CROWD....

To me,an MC,is an individual artist expressing himself in a collective world, intrinsecally speaking, but,as to not stray too much,an MC as opposed to a plain rapper possesses first and foremost skills on the mic sufficient enough to create interest in even the most unsuspecting crowds,if non-hip-hop,even more daring the feat.Combining skill, cunning, wit and charisma,a true mc is like a good rock lead singer, making the crowd feel his lyrics as their own.Notice I emphasize on crowds instead of listeners,as a true MC HAS to be proficient at live shows,if not,he's just good studio equipment.Freestyles preferred, but not indispensable,as I've seen really goood mc's who have to sit down and THINK what they want to say,I'd say different brain processes, event though I'm a freestyle loon myself,I do not look down on non-freestylers.let's just say it's an added bonus, like knowing how to cut with your left hand or something(dj wise).
ReplyDeleteI had the impression, at a MC meant Master of Ceremony or MicrophoneController, meaning that the first is a hypeman - If your party has a DJ, this hypeman is making the guests amped and the second meaning is the wellknown man on the spot, doing his thing with the audience in his hands... I grew up with the second meaning, and listening to Melle Mel and Public Enemy, I had to reset my musical background and feel this raw energy, that came from them..
ReplyDeleteMoving on to today, where the mainstream has allowed our culture in, we do bent and stretch the borders for an MC... Nas is a MC, being who he is and bringing the things to the point.. He's not the brightest MC productionwise but Nas has a skill to describe thoughts and feelings in a way where the consumer can be on the same level... Jay Z is more of a rapper, and Im a fan of him (HUGE )but he's more focused on the sound and how people was recieving...
