Top ten posse cuts of all time:

What up:

I hope this blog finds you in good health and spirits.  It seems like every song of the last 8 years is a posse cut.  does anyone make songs with just themselves on them anymore (Kudos to the underground).  When did artist get so insecure with their own skills that they needed to bring on every hot rapper in the scene to make themselves, I don't know, more credible?

Back in the day we did posse cuts because guys were our friends.  We were bugging in the studio and one thing led to another and BAMB!, we had a song.  So in honor or those who need others,  I present the list of best posse cuts of all time.  How do you get on this list you might ask, well here are the qualifiers:
1-Beat had to be bananas
2-Emcee had to be bananas
3-Lyrics had to be B.A.N.A.N.A.S

Here is my list and in order

1-The Symphony-Juice Crew All Stars: Not only was this one of Marly Marls greatest tracks, but look at the line up: A rookie in Craig G, Masta Ace, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane.  Not only was this a killer line up but the lyrics were crazy

2-Buddy-Native Tongues-What do you get when you put Queen Latifah, Monie Love, The Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, in a room and mix it with a nuts tracks.  A classic.

3-Live at the BBQ-Main Source: Of the Classic "Breaking Atoms" LP, The song, produced by Large Professor, featured the first time the World heard Nas, Akynele, Joe Fatal, and Extra P.  THe lyrics on this still ring in my mind like I heard them yesterday and the song is almost 20 years old.  If you are not up on it then SHAME ON YOU Y.G. COP IT

4-Scenerio-A Tribe Called Quest: Tribe love putting their friends on tracks but this was not just a friendly come up.  The Leaders of The New School, with Busta Rhyme, Charlie Brown and Dinco Dee were on fire at the time with "Just Another Case of That Old P.T.A".  It was also when Busta really showed the world he was ready to be dolo.  The track, Produced by Ali Shaheed and TIP was just bugnannies. "RRRARRR RRRARR LIKE A DUNGEON DRAGON".  The remix with it's dedication and rhyme with HOOD on it was the icing on an already great cake.

5-Brooklyn's Finest-Jay Z:  the concept the Jigga and Bigga, how you figga would form a group called "The Commission" was cemented when these two emcee's first showed the world what a song with both of them on it would sound like.  Now an argument can be made that this is not a posse cut but a duet, but honestly these was no one else (MAYBE KANE) who would be able to come on that track and do the damaged they did.  "IF Faith had twins, she'd probably have two pac's, get it, Tu-Pac's"  A gem.

6-Swagger Like Us-T.I.: SO I jumped a few years ahead but this song is still going to be years ahead of it's time.  Here is the line up that ten years, no twenty years, from now we will still be shaking our mic's at: T.I., Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and oh yea, JAY Z.  It was four emcee's just trying to out do each other.  It was an ode to back in the day.  Who had the most skills and the biggest ego, and it was tested by the best rhymes.  it also showed what Lil Wayne is made of.  You can make your assumptions right there LOL

7-What's the difference Between Me and You-Dr. Dre: Off the Chronic 2001 this banger came equipped with lyrics from Dre, Em, X to the Z, and Snoop.  banging track, lyrics and emcee's.  not much more you could ask for right there.

8-All about the Benjamins's: Puff Daddy:  I know what you are thinking, and most of you are probably right, but you can't knock that record.  It still bangs and is one of the few times in history that a female held her own on a posse cut (Kudos the Lil Kim).  Plus I am a lox fan for life so Sheik Louch will always get love from me.  This is one of my favorite songs of all time, I don't care what anybody thinks

9-Triumph-Wu Tang: Many thought that after the succes that they all had as solo artists that the Wu Klan would never re-assemble.  It took almost two years but when this came out it gave everyone what they were looking for.  Killer beat by Rza, and lyrics to go from the brothers of Staten Island.  They were never the same after this track

10-I leave it up to you.  fill in the blank

  1. Another cool post Serch.

Other honourable mentions (not in any particular order):

    1. Organized Konfusion, O.C & Q-Tip - Let's Organize

    2. D&D All Stars (Mad Lion, Doug E Fresh, KRS One, Fat Joe, Smif N Wessun & Jeru The Damaja) - 1,2 Pass It

    3. Heavy D, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Grand Puba, Q-Tip, Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Don't Curse (I remember hearing a story that it was actually supposed to have Rakim on there too !) How much would it cost to assemble that line-up today ?

    4. Jigmastas, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Shabaam Sahdeeq & Mr Complex Lyrical Fluctuation Remix.

    5. MC Serch, Nas, Chubb Rock, Red Hot Lover Tone - Back to the Grill Remix (not just because it's Serch's blog ! Ask anybody this is absolutely dope !)

I'm going to stop there, next up ?...

  3. Nice choice. I totally slept on "Don't Curse" but I could not stand Pete Rock attempt at a slow flow on a fast track. he brought the whole record down. G Rap did his think on that and Puba really killled in with "I take a curse word and just say COUF, COUF flipped the other way mean Huh?!?" Love that line.
Thanks for the love on my joint, I thought it would be just a little too arrogant to say anything about my own music. You know there is a hidden version of that Back to the grill again record with Percy P, The Riddler, Akynele, Large Professor, O.C., NAS, CHubbs and me on the actual 2 inch reel that we recorded the song on. We could not get the clearances from Big Beat or Wanrer Brothers so we had to 86 it. Just a little info for those who care to know

  4. "Self Destruction" - Stop The Violence movement; feat. KRS-One, D-Nice, Ms. Melodie, Delite, Daddy-O, Wise, Fruitkwan, Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Just-Ice, Heavy D, Chuck D & Flavor Flav.
    (NOW THAT'S A POSSE CUT!!)

This song can sit comfortably amid the top (3), or humbly at the (10) spot. The timing of this record was so appropriate. It has had an impact on many lives in the inner cities, putting an end to the senseless acts of violence occurring in our communities, related to our music. 'Just-Ice', the self professed "Original Gangsta of Rap", even threw his hat in on this one. A powerful message, brought to you by the perfect blend of messengers.

    ============================

"Right Back at You" - Mobb Deep; feat. Prodigy, Havoc, Big Noyd, and Wu-Tang's Ghostface & Raekwon

How do we go from 'Stop The Violence' to Mobb Deep? The caveat is -Mobb Deep is a talented group, their music is more like; formulated fervor. The production on the Mobb Deep "The Infamous" album is exemplary. This is the album that has given us the cult classic "Shook Ones Pt. 2", a production feat that not many can achieve. The posse cut "Right Back at You", needless to say, is a well done collaboration between artists, who were making their debuts at that time, and have certainly held their own to this day.

    Peace

  6. This topic seems real difficult to me... Couldn't we get 20?

Along with Serch's pics and few from above I'm thinkin "Roll Wit The Flava" with Flavor Unit, "Represent" with DITC, " Banned from T.V." with N.O.R.E. and company, "The Last Song" with D.O.C. and NWA, "Classic" with Rakim, KRS, Kanye and Nas, "Stranded On Death Row" from The Chronic...

    Damn...This one's a real tough one...

"Symphony II" was dope to me too. "Down The Line" from Nice & Smooth. "I'm the Man" from Gang Starr with Jeru and Lil Dap. "Burn Hollywood Burn" with Chuck D, Cube and BDK. Damn! How bout a top 50?

  8. Thanks for the feedback Serch, it's a real shame that alternative version of "back to the grill again" never saw the light of day as it sounds extremely dope !! :( Totally agree by the way about Pete Rock's verse on "Don't Curse", without a doubt, he's one of the all time greats of production but his flow didn't fit the beat that HE made !!

  12. Dont know if this really counts but Winter Warz is one of my fav cuts and damn if all my input hasnt already been mentioned. I will throw out "Bring em home safe", not just cause Serch caught burn on it, but it had an impact to me. Rockin Robin became Lady of Rage, correct? Never tried to verify that...Sad to say but they just dont do Posse Cuts like they used to, "Swagga like us" is aight, but doesnt compare to the joints from a few years back. KRS had it right when he said the "new school" would be the old school artists...

  13. Here's a little piece of history, back in 1992 I used to record the rap show on KISS FM London. They had a top 20 singles countdown and of course "Back to the Grill again" was one of them.

Please note: the quality is VERY POOR ! (the casette has warped over time and is too slow)

It's only here because I thought it was appropriate to the topic.

I'm sure you can easily find much better quality out there but that's not the point, this has an intro by the hosts (it was number 6 that week) and I don't want to spoil the ending but there's an advert for a club with a very "appropriate" name after the track, I SWEAR this is 100% genuine ! (you probably COULDN'T make it up !)

Old school cats might appreciate this, the tape was a "pause mixtape" I made at the time and I used a sony walkman with megabass on to rip it !

The other would be from Dre's Aftermath release: East Coast/West Coast Killaz, with RBX, KRS One, B Real and Nas.
